Michelin used tire buying guide — what each line is worth used

Defender, Premier, Pilot Sport, CrossClimate. Five Michelin lines and the used market for each.

Michelin makes some of the longest-lived tires on the road, which means used Michelins regularly show up with 50-70% tread remaining and serviceable life of another 30,000-50,000 miles. Understanding the lineup helps you spot the deals.

Defender 2 — the touring workhorse

Michelin's mainstream all-season touring tire. New, it carries a 90,000-mile treadwear warranty — among the longest in the industry. Used Defender 2 tires with 7-8/32 of tread typically have 40,000+ miles left in them, making them one of the best used-tire values in any size.

Common sizes: most family sedans, crossovers, and small SUVs. Look for the tread design with continuous center rib and pronounced shoulder blocks.

Premier A/S — discontinued but still excellent

Replaced in 2020 by the Premier LTX, but still on millions of cars and showing up in the used market. The Premier A/S featured Michelin's EverGrip technology — hidden grooves that emerge as the tread wears, maintaining wet grip even at low tread depths. Excellent used buy if you can find one in your size.

Pilot Sport 4S — performance flagship

Michelin's top-tier summer performance tire. Found on BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Porsche, and other performance cars. New, they're $300-500+ each. Used Pilot Sport 4S tires with 6/32+ of tread routinely sell for half retail and are an exceptional value for performance-car owners.

Caveat: it's a true summer tire, not for cold-weather driving. Verify the tread depth and DOT code — Pilot Sports get hard service and age out faster than touring tires.

CrossClimate2 — all-weather standout

Michelin's all-weather tire — 3PMSF certified for severe snow service while still working as a daily-driver tire in summer. One of the only true year-round options that actually delivers in real winter conditions.

Used CrossClimate2 tires are increasingly common as 2020-2022 model-year cars trade in. Excellent for buyers in moderate-winter climates who don't want to swap tires twice a year.

Latitude Tour HP / X-Ice — SUV-specific lines

The Latitude Tour HP is Michelin's all-season SUV/crossover tire. The X-Ice is the SUV winter tire. Both show up regularly in the used market in popular SUV sizes (235/65R17, 255/55R18, etc.). Often pulled off lease-return SUVs with most of the tread intact.

How to identify the model on a used Michelin

Michelin prints the model name in large letters on one sidewall: 'Defender 2,' 'CrossClimate2,' 'Pilot Sport 4S,' etc. Find that and you know exactly what you're buying. Cross-check against the manufacturer's official tire specs if you're unsure about wear ratings or DOT history.

Watch for the N-spec markings

Some Michelins carry letter codes — N0, N1, N2, MO, RO1, AO. These are OEM specs for specific manufacturers (Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, etc.). A Pilot Sport 4S N0 is a Porsche-spec version — slightly different compound from the standard 4S. If your car needs a specific OEM spec, look for the marking.

Used Michelins are some of the highest-value tires on the market because they were premium new — and they wear slowly.
