Continental tires — the premium tier most Americans overlook

OEM on more European luxury cars than any other brand. Here is the lineup and what each line does best.

Continental — Conti for short — is the largest tire manufacturer in Europe and the OEM tire on a huge percentage of German luxury cars. In the U.S., it's overshadowed by Michelin and Bridgestone in marketing, but the products are absolutely competitive at the premium tier.

PureContact LS — touring all-season

Conti's mainstream all-season touring tire. Competes directly with the Michelin Defender 2 and Bridgestone Turanza QuietTrack. Carries a 70,000-mile treadwear warranty — slightly shorter than the top competitors but real-world wear is competitive.

Standout characteristic: exceptionally quiet at highway speed and excellent wet braking. Often the choice on luxury sedans where ride and noise matter more than maximum tread life.

ExtremeContact line — performance

The ExtremeContact family is the performance lineup:

  • ExtremeContact Sport 02 — flagship summer performance, competes with Pilot Sport 4S
  • ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus — performance all-season, one of the most-recommended in its class
  • ExtremeContact Force — for track use

The DWS 06 Plus is particularly notable — it's a consistent top pick in performance-all-season testing, often ahead of competitors at a similar or lower price point.

CrossContact line — SUV and crossover

Conti's family for SUVs and crossovers:

  • CrossContact LX25 — touring SUV tire, long-mileage
  • CrossContact RX — luxury SUV emphasis
  • TerrainContact A/T — light truck all-terrain

VikingContact — winter

Conti's dedicated winter tire family. The VikingContact 7 is the current model — a studless winter tire that competes with Blizzak WS90 and X-Ice Snow. Slightly less famous than Blizzak in the U.S. but used widely in Northern Europe where winter testing is brutal. Excellent on snow and ice, slightly less long-wearing than X-Ice.

Run-flat technology

Continental is a major run-flat tire supplier — many BMW, Mini, and Mercedes cars come from the factory with Conti SSR (self-supporting) run-flats. If your car came with run-flats, there's a good chance they were Continentals.

Where Continental stands

Premium tier, full stop. Continental is in the same conversation as Michelin and Bridgestone for serious tire shoppers. The U.S. brand awareness is lower than it should be — partly a marketing budget difference, partly because Continental dominates OEM rather than aftermarket.

Buying used Continentals

Common in the used market via lease-return luxury vehicles. The DWS 06 and PureContact are particularly worth seeking out used — both wear evenly and are easy to verify by sidewall markings. Check for the model name printed on the sidewall in large letters.
